 HISTORY OF LEANDER, TEXAS
Leander, Texas known for the discovery in 1973, of a prehistoric archeological site six miles east of the city, discovered by the Texas Department of Transportation as they were excavating for the expansion of F.M. 1431. More than 150 fireplaces and campsites were uncovered and in 1982, archeologists discovered the skeleton of a human female, 10,000 to 13,000 years old, that became known as the "Leanderthal Lady". Leander, Texas consisted mostly of farm land, cattle ranches and home to the many men who helped build the Austin Texas State Capitol. Connected by the railroad that operated between Austin, Texas and Burnet, Texas, Leander naturally became home to many settlers, indians, cattle ranchers and railroad workers.

In the Blockhouse Creek Subdivision, had previously been part of Blockhouse Fort built in 1838 by the Republic of Texas. The fort consisted of cedar blockhouse and stockade built around a spring and big lookout tree, and was manned by Texas Rangers. A blockhouse is defined as a strong wooden fort with a projecting second story and openings in the walls for defenders to shoot from. In 1839, the original fort was burned by indians and never rebuilt.
Alexander Stuart (A.S.) Walker came to Texas from Virginia. His father practiced law with David G. Burnet, the old Texas revolutionary and J. Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas. A.S. Walker moved to Georgetown in 1853 and was named disctrict clerk and district attorney. He was elected district judge in 1862, while serving the Confederate Army. In 1865, soon after his son was born, he acquired possession of the Block House land in payment for legal services.
A. S. Walker returned to Austin and launched a newspaper called The Democratic Statesman and served as its first editor-in-chief. He practiced law with Alexander W. Terrell, a war hero who became a Texas Senator in which he authorized legislation to construct the Texas State Capitol. A.S. Walker served as a district judge and Texas Supreme Court justice through to his elder years.

A.S. Walker, Jr. took possession of the Block House land when his father passed in 1896. The Walker House, has recently been renovated to the period in which it was built. The site is open for tours and houses many family artifacts, original wallpaper samples and items found on the property.
Many native American Indians lived in the area, not too far from the Walker House is a historic burial ground that is protected and gated to preserve the history and spiritual beliefs of those resting there.
